Restoration by rose tremain6/8/2023 In my opinion, it isn’t that they take over it’s that they develop their own integrity. This process of discovery and revision is, I suppose, what people mean when they talk about ‘the characters taking over’ during the writing of a novel. Tremain writes that Merivel resisted her efforts to turn him into an object lesson. Her anti-hero, Robert Merivel, was destined to be a screw up. In order to satirize her own time, she looked for another time in Britain’s history when material greed was the driving motive of the entire country. In the case of this book, Tremain writes that she was inspired by the greed of 1980s Britain. I’m not used to an author explicitly telling me what they were thinking. Normally, I ignore forewords, introductions, prefaces, and afterwords, but I’m glad that I read Rose Tremain’s notes about the writing of Restoration when I finished the book.
